A glimpse at the “Brew Masters” segment of my new personal project The Masters. This photo essay features the talented artisan beer crafters at Red Hook’s Sixpoint Brewery. Founded in 2004 by Wisconsin native Shane Welch, the Sixpoint microbrewery is located in a 7,000 square foot warehouse in Red Hook that formerly manufactured filing cabinets. Found in a condemned state, Welch rehabilitated the space and slowly and surely became one of Brooklyn’s staple brewers. Sixpoint Brewing Company has produced hundreds of different recipes, first selling by the growler and then by the micro-keg in 2011. “Beer is Culture” is the philosophy the company lives by, with the brewmasters taking pride in creating beer that cannot be defined by traditional and unimaginative labels. Their dedication to the ideal shows in every batch.
Highlights from this feature were recently published in my Brooklyn City Guide for VSCO Journal.
ABOUT THE MASTERS PROJECT
The Masters is a long-term documentary project chronicling artisans whose living comes from the work they craft with their hands. From coffee slingers and brewmasters to metal workers and fashionistas, The Masters examines the personalities, the tools, and the passion that bring these sometimes unappreciated and mysterious crafts to life.
